Training interpreters in Jordan : Challenges and Solutions of Consecutive Interpretations

Abstract
Oral interpretation is more challenging than written translation, as the translator has time and an opportunity to consult the translation aids such as dictionaries and computers. However, the interpreters do not. This paper aims to shed light on the challenges that training interpreters encounter during the process of consecutive interpretation. The sample of the study consists of 25 BA students in Translation Department at Yarmouk University during consecutive interpretation Course (English-Arabic) in the Fall Semester 2016/2017. The participants were allowed to listen three times to the Source Text (ST), which was divided into one minute period for each time, and then they were asked to record their interpretations. After that their interpretations were collected, discussed and analyzed. The paper finds that the most challenges encountered by training interpreters are concentration, note-taking and reproducing the ST in the TL.
